Nutrition Basics - The Citadel Diet

Imagine a medieval castle set atop a hill. Nothing enters the castle that doesn’t belong. Each successive wall that surrounds that castle has guards that question newcomers and shady characters.

“Who goes there! State your intention” The gate guard yells as you hurry to collect yourself.
“I’m a merchant, here to see your city. I saw your city…”
“We don’t take visitors or guests, no room for you here!”
“I have fresh produce from Bree, just down the road, would make a great addition to the market here.”
“Well, alright then. I know your town. Your kin are good people and we trust the quality of your product. You may enter and sell your wares.”

The modern world is full of hucksters and scam artists. The last place you want to have them affect is your own health. Everything needs to be vetted and properly understood before we take it into our own homes or consume in our day-to-day lives. The trust that we give corporations, food-suppliers, and local restaurants is completely unwarranted.

Where do we start with the massive amount of nutritional information, scientific studies, and health influencers all competing for your attention? The basic answer is to go “back in time” and get your food from people you trust. The modern world has given us chronic diseases and ailments at a rate that no other point in history could compare to. A return to traditional foods, from people we know and trust, is the only way forward.

Now, here’s where everyone has their particular objection to these simple principles:

"How about avocado oil?"

"I saw a study that soy is actually a great protein source."

"GMOs have been shown to be just as nutritious as non-GMOs."

None of this matters

No human on earth can keep up with the innovations in diet and lifestyle that modernity offers and filter it through a scientific consensus.

Tradition offers us a solution to problems that we don’t even know exist. Eat traditional foods that have existed for thousands of years. Novelty is not a solution to the ails of food and health. We must do our best to live like our ancestors, supplementing our broken modern lives where we can.

So, build your ancient Citadel. Ask your ancestors how they ate, just like you would consult the castle’s grey-bearded architects. What ingredients did they use? How did they grow their food? Look up old cookbooks, recipes, and start a garden at home. Return to tradition and build your ancient Citadel.
